In the gym, Progressive overload is the gradual increase in weight over time. Training to become better and fitter by its very nature is to increase the intensity, run and swim faster, throw further, lift more, cycle longer, and so on.

Increasing the stress on the body and allowing it to adapt to these new stresses ultimately produces gains in endurance and strength. However, you can only apply maximum intensity if you have a goal to beat. If you don't push yourself to beat a goal, improvements can be very slow.

How can you run faster than last time if you don’t know how fast you ran over what distance? To increase the intensity and apply the laws of progressive resistance training to your run, you need to Record / Document how fast you ran.

Once you have made this record, it becomes your personal best, and your new goal is to beat it! When you have something to focus on, you naturally begin the process of progressive resistance training or progressive overload.

Because your body has an amazing ability to adapt to these new stresses, you will beat it repeatedly until you finally reach your maximum potential.

Recording information about your progress is vital because, without this information, you have no goals or personal bests to beat. Recording information about your weight training sessions is a little more challenging than recording how fast you can run 400 meters. Recording your weight training sessions requires tracking various numbers, reps and sets, all multiplied by different body parts.

There is also no defined goal other than how you feel before you decide to try and increase your intensity by adding some more weight to the bar.

* If you can lift a certain amount of weight for a certain number of reps for a certain number of sets, and it feels easier than your previous workout session, add more weight.

But even this feeling can be misleading because it’s been days before your last session for that body part and in between, you have exercised other body parts.

Sometimes it’s difficult to rely on a gym log for feedback because when you look at your training log page, the hundreds of numbers staring back at you contain no goals or personal bests, and if they do - good luck finding them…!

In my quest to find a More Logical and Productive Approach to progressive resistance training using weights, I created a training method that continually gives you a Personal Best AND a New Goal. The logic is when you beat this goal you have done more in the gym than last time, thus adding more stress and stimulating growth.

Doing More in the gym or trying to do more is why you are there, but sometimes it’s quite hard to calculate if you are Doing More when you use the same weights and repetitions as last time.
